Rob HandelmanOne of the definitions of the word contemplate is to gaze at thoughtfully, to have in view as a possibility. As a mindfulness-based psychologist and psychotherapist, I help to facilitate this gazing, by helping people to slow down and pay a close and deep attention to all aspects of their experience. It is in this present moment, out of the past and the future that we learn that all experiences can be allowed and accepted. This can be a powerful antidote to depression, stress and anxiety.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist in New York and New Jersey. I integrate traditional insight oriented talk therapy with the deeper knowing of Buddhist psychology. Through my own meditation practice, retreats and trainings, I have learned that the skills of meditation - non-judgmental awareness, exploration, trust, letting go - can be brought into psychotherapy, transforming the experience into what Buddhist psychologist Jack Kornfield calls a shared meditation.

I have an active and interactive style. Although I work mainly with depression, anxiety and career and relationship issues, I consider my specialty to be helping people become more patient with themselves and others. Through listening, support, exercises, feedback, and gentle challenge when helpful, clients learn to see more clearly their habitual defenses that may no longer be useful, and are more able to be open to the possibility of healing, developing new patterns, and feeling more alive and connected.

I work with individuals and couples. I also run therapy groups for people working on being more authentic in relationships.
