Contemplative psychotherapy. What might that mean? Surely not any one thing. Mindfulness. Awareness. Generosity. Compassion. Presence with one's experience. A certain cultivated, perhaps meditation based dispassion regarding that experience. The capacity for empathic connection with others. A commitment to the fundamental worthiness and goodness of people. A capability toward both non-judgement and a basic acceptance of the human condition. Non-harm.
I've been in private practice for 11 years now. I work with adult couples and individuals who are struggling with a range of issues, including relationship concerns, marriage difficulties, finding meaning in their lives, learning self care, as well as with addictions, depression, anger problems, trauma recovery (including sexual and/or other types of abuse, and domestic and other types of violence), suicidality, self worth, and co-dependency.
In an essential way, all of this is about relationship, whether with oneself (perhaps the bedrock upon which all the rest is built) or with others or with a Higher Power or with the material world. So, it's not unusual for my work with people to have some focus in the area of relationship development and wellness. It's really impossible to avoid this. Along these lines, the theme of loving kindness becomes an important one. "All beings want to be happy" we're told. And there seem to be very much more and very much less effective ways of experiencing that.
I'd be honored to speak with you about your concerns, and about how working together with me might be of benefit to you. Please call for a free, no obligation phone consultation. If your needs turn out to be different from what I can address with you, I'll be happy to refer you to a more suitable therapist. I look forward to talking with you.
